You're a different breed though John. Beast.

I wouldn't recommend spreading your legs farther apart...not at first anyway. That will just create more problems down the road. Best to try to do them correctly first. A large portion of learning to squat with good depth is mental. Lots of people have poor ankle and hip flexion also. Spreading your legs farther apart won't necessarily help with any of these issues.

I'm confused about what you guys are saying. When I hear "spread the legs" I think of opening the hips. That is a good thing and will help create depth. As many people can tend to squat on top of their hips, so to speak.

But if we're talking about taking a wider stance that may feel better but it certainly won't help create more depth if that is the goal here.

On the depth question I really think what is most important is going as deep as your flexibility will allow without the spine creeping under the hips...in other words the butt wink (lower back rounding). That is more important long term than depth for depths sake.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.

Thanks for the clarification. I may have misunderstood what John was saying.

Oh, I wasn't sure either, Ross. I'm really just wondering if I'm the only one who see's this as two different things..

Even given that, whatever keeps the hips open is going to allow for a better position.

It is no surprise to me that the position people find the most "comfortable" is often the "easiest". That doesn't mean it is the best for the long run.

Oh I know. I'm just glad that you separated it, because they are two completely different things. I didn't even consider the alternative when I posted...
