Default What is best? (Heavy weight of light weights)

During training what is best to use heavy or light weight?
Inside the gym I attend the focus is to use light weight for safety. Light means small and heavy means big. That definition is used no matter how many repetitions peoples can do.
Example, ones test me in leg press I did nearly 30 repetitions. So, he set the same weight for 3 set of 15 repetitions.

How light and heavy are determined? What should we use, heavy or light weights, at gym?

are you more interested in powerlifting or bodybuilding? either way, ditch the leg press...

leg press was just an example:
30 set weight A
What could 15 repetitions could do with weight A if I can do 30 ?

nothing...add more weight.....or turn leg press into squats.

If you want to get bigger and/or stronger then there is really no reason to go much higher than 10 reps.

What I mean by that is choosing a weight that you can push for 10 reps or less and then fail.

light weights (more reps) ---> strength
