Question What's your take on breathing during a lift

I'm curious what the best method for breathing during a lift would be. I've been given conflicting advice... so I'm a little confused on something as basic as breathing

I've been told to exhale during the lift so I don't get an aneurysm, and I've also been told that I'm stronger during the exhale/push...

But...

I've also been told to exhale and inhale between reps and hold during the lift because when I'm filled with air, my chest and structure is better supported, thus I'll be stronger....

What's your take?

Default Also...

would you suggest different breathing, depending on the lift?

For example:

Exhale - Squat
Hold - Bench Press
Etc.....

I'm loving your questions today, Pimpsticky. I have to get off the comp but I will definitely follow the thread and there has been some discussion I can track down for you.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.

This is my take on breathing. ( ive just learnt about it)

You should breathe in during the lowering,(or eccentric) phase of the lifting and breathe out during the lifting,(or concentric) phase of a lift. Never hold your breathe, (unless underwater)

To some extent I agree with that. But controlled breathing can help. This is sort of like partially holding your breath or pushing out against a closed glotis and then allowing a full realease after the sticking point. But this sort of thing is only necesary on big heavy lifts. High rep light stuff and isolations...things like that...you should be able to breath naturally.

See the glossary http://www.bodybuilding.net/training...ions-1184.html

I provided a def for Valsalva maneuver and a link to further discussion.

you can breathe at any time as long as you keep those abdominals braced. alot of times i don't exhale until i'm very close to the top of deads or squats...just helps me keep the abs very tight.

Talking As always... you guys prove that I came to the right place for advice...

THANKS GUYS!

I came back to the gym several months ago with an interest in getting fit again.

Then... I found this Forum. Prior to this forum, I had no idea how complex, dynamic and f'ing fun bb'ing can be. The education I got from you guys helped me take a simple interest in fitness and turn it into a hobby.

Then... as I continue to study teachings and guidance from this forum, I have come to realize that my newfound bb'ing hobby has graduated/morphed into a full-on PASSON. I can't get enough of it.

I love the feeling of lifting a heavy freaking pile of iron that 6 months ago I never could have lifted. And I'm stoked, knowing that a strong work ethic combined with proper eating & rest, combined with an educated, scientific approach to training, will translate to even bigger gains down the road!

Sh_t... I'm gettin a chubby!
