Why does everyone say to do lots of reps to get six pack abs?

Default Why does everyone say to do lots of reps to get six pack abs?

When I ask someone how to get my chest bigger they say do heavy bench press and heavy fly’s. So I do anywhere from 1 to 15 reps for my sets and my chest eventually gets bigger. When I ask someone how to get my abs bigger they tell me to do countless crunches (and other ab workouts that require a lot of reps) a couple times a week. Why can’t someone think of an ab workout like a 5x5 or 12x10x8x6 or 5x4x3x2x1 with heavy weight? Don’t you guys think that this would give better results?

The 5X5 routines are great for abs. Just add in a little accessory stuff & you're golden. Doing weighted abdominal stuff twice a week is plenty.

I cant find any 5x5 workouts for abs. I am thinking of grabing a huge dumbell and doing 5 sets of 5 reps of sit ups. Or maybe puttting a dumbell between my legs and doing leg rasies. Does anyone know of any workouts like this?

Don't do sit ups. You're confused...you don't need an entire workout just for abs.

How am i confused? Lol do i need half a workout for abs? I am just asking if anyone knows of a low rep workout for abs. And why cant i do situps?

I think what ross is trying to say is that you dont need a full routine or an abb day..

For example do your normal routine for legs once you've finished then spend a few mins doing abbs.
You can do this 2/3 times a week after you've finished your main routine...

Yeah I think this is a problem with semantics.

When you say you want a 5x5 workout for abs that makes it sound like you are looking for a full workout for abs.

There is no such thing as a 5x5 routine for abs. You can do 5x5 reps for abs if you want but that is not a "workout" that is just one part of a workout.

When you say workout in terms of one exercise it makes it sound like you wish to devote an entire day to just your abs.

So anyway, like the others said you can throw in ab work throughout the week.


You'd be much better served doing static core work, anti-rotation, and other core work of that nature. This too grows your abs.

For abdominal flexion though I do either leg raises or reverse curls and janda situps.

I think some of the stuff about high rep ab stuff comes from the fact that your abs along with your calves are slow twitch muscle fibres. They are much harder to grow then any other muscle. They do grow some but genetics has alot to do with it as well. However, you can strengthen them alot but I think as far as just "getting a six pack" is concerned, you're better off spending your time nailing your diet to reduce fat and just throw in an ab exercise to your existing workout if it doesn't have it already. Twice a week is lots and I would try to get one rotation and one flexion exercice (not sure if thats the right word). You can also work on core stability (planks, rollouts, suitcase deads, etc) which have good tradeoffs to your big lifts.
