I'm confused about what you guys are saying. When I hear "spread the legs" I think of opening the hips. That is a good thing and will help create depth. As many people can tend to squat on top of their hips, so to speak.

But if we're talking about taking a wider stance that may feel better but it certainly won't help create more depth if that is the goal here.

On the depth question I really think what is most important is going as deep as your flexibility will allow without the spine creeping under the hips...in other words the butt wink (lower back rounding). That is more important long term than depth for depths sake.
