The trick is how do you learn to punch exceptionally...without hitting anything?

You could argue that you could just shadow box or something or use gloves, but guaranteed the first hit you land against bone will hurt like a motherf**ker.

Everyone's ideas are very good, but personaly I think that if you are getting into bad situations now, you should start using your knees and elbows. If your opponent is too far away or is too fast to get close to, then use your palms. And I don't mean that you should start slapping him, but if you palm someone on the nose, they'll start thinking twice about fighting with you. It won't hurt them much, but the sight of your own blood scares most amature fighters.
The reason I think you should go with this tactic, is that hardening your knuckles takes a long amount of time. Not only that, but there are certain dangers that have been mentioned above.
