Cheap sources of protein
What are some of the cheaper choices for protein intake? Tuna is great, but apparently you shouldn't eat too much due to the mercury. Any other recommendations?

look for coupons in the paper for meat....the last two weekends i've gotten lucky...scored 3 pounds of hamburger for like $4....and 2.5 pounds of chicken breats for around $4...

otherwise....nuts, cheese, milk, whey powder...

it'd be nicer if meat was cheaper...

Protein Sources:

Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast
Tuna (water packed)
Fish (salmon, seabass, halibut, sushi, mahi mahi, Orange roughi, tilapia, Sardines)
Extra Lean Ground Beef or Ground Round (92-96%)
Protein Powder (Whey, Casein, Soy, Egg)
Low or Non-Fat Cottage cheese, Ricotta
Low fat or Non fat Yogurt
Ribeye Steaks or Roast
Top Round Steaks or Roast (stew meat, London broil, Stir fry)
Top Sirloin (Sirloin Top Butt)
Beef Tenderloin (filet mignon)
Top Loin (NY Strip Steak)
Flank Steak (Stir Fry, Fajitas)
Eye of Round (Cube meat, Stew meat, Bottom Round)
Ground Turkey, Turkey Breast slices or cutlets (*no deli or sandwich meats)
The majority of that stuff is fairly cheap when bought in bulk...your best friend would be places like Costco or Sam's club if you have them.

Do you have any bulk foods stores like Costco or Sams Club by your house? If so, give them a visit.

There's a Costco somewhat far away, but it's probably worth the trip. Thanks for the input

Just be aware (if you arent already), that shopping at CostCo requires a membership. So if you're going to make the trip, dont just plan on waltzing in, theres a yearly membership fee i believe. Kind of like the gym, hah.

Helpfull hint:

Look for marked down meats and throw them in the freezer immediately or cook promptly, to avoid potential for spoilage. These are meats that are getting close to going out of date, so they will have to be reduced for quick sale. Sometimes you will find great bargains this way.

You should cook the meat promptly after thawing. Again this is is so you can avoid spoilage.

Use your good judgement when choosing your meats and be aware of the color and look of the meat. Talk to a knowlegeable meat department employee, if you don't know what you are looking for.

A friend of mine said you can find more deals like this if you shop early in the morning.

Invest in a large freezer to store your bargain food items. I stock up on turkeys during the holiday seasons, because they are so cheap during this time.
