You'll see the same shit at the college gyms--especially since it's free. Maybe worse. Try going on Saturday or Sunday morning, seeing all the hungover frat boys trying to "get their lift on."

At Virginia Tech, when I first started going there, we had the VT Weight Club, which charged people. Then the students bitched and moaned that the weights should be free. So we packed up our weights (at least the ones that were paid for with club dues) and move off campus. Then the university had to buy new weights and let anyone into the weight room.

Our reasoning for not taking college money for the weights and let anyone in is that we did not want the "recreational" lifters who would be more prone to injury, more prone to not take care of the equipment (potentially putting everyone at risk), or needlessly taking up equipment time from the more "serious" lifters.

I had gone to the free gym a few times when it was more convenient. It was a nightmare compared to when it was the Club. Sure, they had more, and nicer, weights and machines. But there were also dumbbells all over the place, kids flailing away trying to do curls with way too much weight, and all of the other crappy shit all gyms have to deal with, only magnified to the extent that the gym was open to all 20 thousand students...
