Bad Back when squatting
Last few sessions ive had a bad lower back when squatting in the smith machine because we havent got a squat rack, it kinda feels like the spine at the bottom of back is squashing together, was really hard to do pendlays today because my back was hurting, what should i do, im doing bill starrs 5x5

Sounds like you're probably not clearing your hips. Someone else will post in this thread eventually. I can help people in person, but I'm horrible at trying to explain squat technique on the forum. Have you tried squatting A2G? (Alllll the way down)

Dumbbells.
That reminds me...I have decent form, but the last time I squatted in a smith machine, my back hurt for a week.

When I was able to squat (hope to be back there soon) I avoided the smith machine because it locked me into a specific plane of motion that hurt my back. Dumbbells or other freeweights are much better IMO than a smith machine for squats. Do you work out at home or in a gym?

Why not do some single leg variation? You could do pistol squats and I guarantee that you would be able to clean that weight and put it on your back, or you could always use dumbbells.
To be honest I would take a leg press machine over a smith squat anyday, maybe that is an option you could go with. Do you have access to a leg press machine?

im training in a local gym, we've got a machine leg press not the one that holds the plates, should I use that? could I hold a barbell behind me by my arse and squat like that as we got some small plates or should I just use the dbs?
these variations going to be ok with bill starrs 5x5?
