Protein shakes are not that important for building mass. What's important is to get stronger in the main lifts (squat, deadlift, etc) and get adequate calories/protein. Supplements are generally overrated and over-hyped

Sleep and rest a lot
Eat well, no processed foods, a lot of whole organic foods
Train hard, multi jointed exercises, focus on back and legs

Eat SOMETHING within 30 minutes of waking up, and eat as soon as possible after lifting weights (this is why people take shakes with fact acting carbs and protein). Breakfast is important because if you do not eat, your body will behave as if it was still asleep. In addition, your body has been without nutrients for 6-10 hours and it requires them at all times if you're plan is to pack on a lot of muscle.
Kevsworld is right, supplements are highly over rated. The only supplement with concrete evidence to support its effectiveness is creatine, best taken in the form of creatine monohydrate.
And like the other guys say, mastery of the main compound lifts are mandatory for putting on a lot of muscle.

Good tips here although I believe Whey protein, multivitamins, and fish oils can be added to the good supplement list...

Agree with everyone. Train hard, eat lots of good quality food and make sure you get enough rest.

To build muscles fast, there is actually a smart way to do it. First of all, find out what is your unique genetic body type or what is known as somatotype. Then customise a training programme complemented by the correct nutrition and diet around your body type. Work on it and persevere and you will definitely see results.

Depending on your level at the moment, exercise the same muscles at most every two days - if you're getting into big weights, don't do a full workout every day, as your body will not be able to recover.
