In simpler terms, the iliotibial band runs from the hip to the knee moreso on the outer side of the leg.

This gives some good stretches for the area (look to the right side of the hip abductor listing for stretches):

But dont forget to stretch the hamstrings too! What I've noticed with this problem is it's because you tend to lean forward a little too much and therefore the weight is shifted forward to the knees instead of the hips where the weight should be lowered. Some people have a hard time with this because they arent flexible enough particularly in the hamstrings to shift the weight backwards and lower themselves that way instead of forward.
