Needing Advice - Starting the gym this monday
Hi guys,
I start the gym monday and really want to get into bodybuilding.
I'm 26 years of age, 6" and around 15st 8pounds in weight.
Should I be leaving the weights well alone and just go crazy with the cardio at this stage to get rid of the fat???
Any advice welcome.

No I would definately start hitting the weights. Lifting weights will help your metabolism and make loosing fat easier.

Check out the threads on "Starting Strength", and do a google search on it..
I ordered the book, as well..
I do both cardio AND weights..
30 minutes low intensity, then another 30-40 lifting weights..
High intensity cardio on my days off (I workout every other day), too, if I'm up for it..
Remember to eat a meal before AND immediately after your workout!
That's where I went wrong..
How many calories a day are you eating?
How much protein?
What are you eating?

Yeah, Jon. A lot of us (Most, probably) do both weights and cardio. Just make sure to do your cardio after you do weights, or you won't be able to lift as much.

See, I dunno about that..
I was going to do that, but then I'm thinking:
"as long as I have to spend 10 minutes on the treadmill anyways to get my muscles warmed up, what's another 20 minutes?".
As long as it's sufficiently low intensity I can't see how it could hurt your lifting, and it certainly helps, I think..
It gets your body warmed up, which helps prevent injury, and it gets your body past that 20 minute mark where your body starts burning fat..
Whatever you do after that is gravy, figuratively speaking..
But what do I know? LOL

You can do that, but the preferred warmup (at least around here) is to do some warmup lifting, and maybe some stretching.

^^^ Actually to warm-up cardio is really shitty.
What is MUCH better is doing tons of mobility drills and stability exercises.
Cardio can be done later but doing cardio before is silly. Instead, mobility drills better prepare you for the workout.

Ok so we're discussing Cardio vs. Mobility Drills.
Doing both back to back and then lifting is obviously bad because you will be unnecessarily tired. Therefore, we'll restrict to keeping the topic about Cardio vs. Mobility Drills.
Cardio helps in increasing blood flow through the body. It gets your muscles pumping, etc etc....BUT: does it prepare you to lift heavy weights? Does it enable your body to be prepared to handle large amount of weight and stress? Nope. It just increases blood flow. Thats it.
Mobility Drills on the other hand, help to improve: MOBILITY. Most people cant squat deep, they can't deadlift right, they have form issues which stem from the root problem: bad hip mobility, bad hamstring flexibility and bad lower back stability. Doing mobility drills irradiates this problem. It prepares your body to lift heavy weights. At the same time: it causes quite a bit of sweating. So it is like "cardio" except its a lot more beneficial.
