Depending on which exercise we are talking about, I am a big believer in the "failure sets". My other sets such as warm ups, advanced warm ups and high rep finishers all have thier place in my work out but my bread n butter is with the failure sets. Again this does not count for all exercises but it is the case for me on bench, shoulder press, leg press, all biceps to name a few.

So I agree with Dean but I also agree with Ross because there is always more than one way to skin a cat. Just depends on what yields results for you. At the end of the day if your bustin your ass, truly bustin your ass, good things will happen.
