Default Annoying Injury

I recently had to quit doing pushups, about 2 weeks ago because I was getting pain in a muscle right next to my hip. Figured it would be better to give it time to heal, and the pain had gone away so I thought I could start doing them again. Big mistake.

This morning I did my first one fast, no problem, and figured that the problem had healed and was gone. Second pushup, I felt something I would describe as a combination of a popping and a ripping in the same spot. It's hurting pretty bad now. I'm wondering what I can do to fix this now, as it's a pretty central spot and not something I want to be hurting.

I thought that doing exercises would strengthen a muscle that was being used over time. I was doing 60 pushups in a row no problem before, now I hurt myself doing 2. What gives? Any suggestions on how I can strengthen this area?
