Not to be rude but I think if you're asking that you probably should still be on the SS program.

What are you lifts at now? How long have you been off?

I've been off for about 1 1/2 years doing track and xc.

I was just wondering what programs would i use to cut and if rippetoe is used as bulk by anyone else?

I would say just use rippetoe even if you want to cut. It wont' be as effective as it could be but you've been off for long enough that you require a basic program again. Or at least thats my thoughts. Anyone else wanna chime in here?

Some other things they might want to know:

What are you lifts at now?
What is your diet like now?
What are you stats? (weight, height, bf%, age?)

I don't think the OP has a very large bf%. It's just my guess since there's been no specifics, but I think this is the case of a 170lber with a little tummy fat or lack of freakish muscle striation.

I would chime in with all sorts of things except it would feel silly to me. I don't understand why someone would start lifting again for a month and then want to "cut". If you're fat to start with fat-loss while strengthening (with a program you could handle given the diet) would be the answer, imho.

If on the other hand you just want to look cut up and not get really strong and large...Rippetoe is kinda overkill in a way. It's not meant to be a part of a bodybuilding "bulk/cut" cycle in any case and if you did it on a cutting diet you wouldn't progress very well, probably and then we'd have the typical "change directions again" or give up and criticize the program

I understand why IW would say just continue with the Rippetoes though.

Well I agree a cut is probably overkill and the word is definately overused but if he's going to do that then so be it. You'll probably notice that you'll shed some fat just from getting back into weights again if you watch your diet right.

I would reccomend SS and not worry about fatloss unless you really do need it (25%+ bf). Get some muscle growing under there then when you do decide to cut up and show it off it will be that much more impressive.

Rippetoe is used to learn the lifts and how to train yourself. Beginners can certainly squat three times a week since the intensity is so low.. Just keep building a strength base and becoming familiar with the lifts he recommends. Eventually, like everything else (and especially this programming) you'll need something else. But coming back lifting again, I'd probably stick to a couple of heavy (relatively speaking) compounds per day.

Don't forget your gallon of milk a day ...takes a lot of long hard work to achieve that classic big belly slump shouldered neanderthal look.

Lol. That is the type of body genetics have blessed me with. I train to be a bigger big belly slump shouldered neanderthal!

Actually, my belly is pretty sad. I wants me a powergut.
