in my opinion whey protein is actually the best and most basic supplement one can take, whether bulking or cutting.
but don´t forget to eat a lot of healty stuff icluding lean meat, fish, nuts, veggies, oatmeal, whole grain products etc...

Agreed with the above. The only other supps I take right now is a multivitamin. I've also tried fish oils. The fish oils and muliti vit are more for general health than performance boost with weight lifiting.

A supplement I haven't tried but I believe also on the "valid supp" list is creatine I believe.

However, I would get your diet sorted out before anything.

Whey protein, creatine monohydrate, a (generic) multivatamin, and fish oil. That's about all you really need. I've been lifting for a long time--trust me on this.

Remember--FOOD is the most important source of nutrition. Train and eat properly.

Choosing a good whey protein is the most basic supplement you can take. I always recommend taking a multivitamin and fish oil supplement to everyone. Their benefits are huge. After these it all really depends on how much you want to spend. Nitric Oxide is an awesome pre-workout that will give you a ton of energy and focus during your workout. Weight gainers can be a good substitute whey protein if you are looking to put on large amounts of mass. Finally casein can be a good idea to take prior to bed to make sure your body is supplied with protein all night.

Glutamine and BCAAs are great to make sure you're making the most of your gains and will aid recovery.
